June 28, 2013, we went out to Denkaka with the men who will be making the uniforms. We walked over a mile to find a taxi to take us to the village. We rode in a 12 passenger van with 25 people piled into it. Along with the people were bags of grain, chickens and bags of unknown substance. 25 children were measured. They were told by word of mouth to be at the church for their “fitting”.The children were all dressed in their best clothing and were ready for some pictures to be taken. The families were exited about their children being able to attend school in September. For some families it meant their child would have an opportunity that they never thought was possible. For others, it meant their child would not have to drop out for the next year.
We take education for granted in the USA. Here in Denkaka many of the children do not have the opportunity to attend school. For the cost of a steak dinner out for two people, a child can be educated for a full year and receive a uniform. All children in Ethiopia who attend school must have a uniform. These children wear one uniform every day for their entire year. Sometimes this uniform will be worn for multiple years. They are patched and worn until there is nothing left to patch. If they cannot afford a new one, they are forced to drop out of school until money is found
for a new one. These children were blessed beyond our imagination. The families and church members kept saying, “God bless your people”.
